Christmas Eve and Christmas

CHRISTMAS EVE

Belinda left for KL on Christmas Eve. A few of us went to the airport to send her off, Suffian and Ralph were also there.

This post was supposed to be dedicated to Belinda but I cant seem to write. I miss her too much. :(

CHRISTMAS DAY

Christmas was supposed to be merry and jolly, but that was not the case for me. I was at Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, as a cantor. The First Reading went as it should normally, but when it came to the Responsorial Psalm, it started to get quite nerve wrecking. It was already hard for me to sing when I caught the flu and got sore throat, but the notes on that particular psalm was really high.

Responsorial Psalm went ok ( I think? ), and the Second Reading followed soon after. When it was my turn to sing again, the dreaded scenario happened. In the middle of my song, the mic went off, and situation started getting awkward. I finished before the organ was done, and when I returned to my seat, I explained to Uncle George that the mic went off. But when the it was the Fr. turn, the mic was ok.

I think the uncles who were controlling the volume accidentally switched it off. Arghhh. After mass, I went straight to the car, thus ending my sad midnight story of Christmas Eve.

The next morning, I went out with my sister and her friends after visiting a few relatives. We went to Joanne's house and a few people from church was there *gulp*. Larry and Chiam asked me about the mic problem because they noticed the abrupt 'switch-off'. And Chiam said something about my butt before I went to the altar, cant seem to get that out of her though, hmmm.

We sparked a few interesting conversation, like Larry's imaginary 'friend' who wanted to go for liposuction, and Angela knew a friend of her friend's mum who was the surgeon. Angela was saying that they do not actually use anesthetic during lipo procedure because if they did, you would not know if the surgeon punctured one of your organs or not.

After Joanne's house, we went for ice-cream at Desserts, Dragon was driving. Guess this was my first day of Christmas, I wonder what the other 11 days have installed for me.

3rd day in KL

Our ride in KL.

The 3rd day was the finals already. My school band got in, so it was a 'hooray' moment for my friends and I. Same formation and music for 4 days in a row, and to think that the judges have to sit through the WHOLE show everyday. Nothing new happened during the band performances, but after the announcement of the results, most of the band stayed in the field and played their song, a colaboration with other bands.

St Joe Kuching's CG's flags.

Grace with some random guy from Pupuk Kaltim (I think), and that's Pol with her cousin Daryl.

Pol, Kris and I taking pictures with band members of Fanfarenzug Potsdam, and this guy with thick eyeshadow, who popped into OUR picture.

And he (guy with eyeshadow) thinks we're in HIS picture. *pfft*

Me: Let's take a picture before your band leaves.

Roland: Ok.

Me: *Grab hold onto Roland's arm to find Grace*

*suddenly out of nowhere*
Daryl and Doron: Look! GRAB CHRIS! (Mitch was just around at that moment)

Thus, leading to the picture below.

From L to R: Pol, Kris, Doron, Daryl, Sarah, Roland, and Mitch.

Before I continue..

Just to make things clear, the nickname Involuntary Twink, is just a screen name from friends after I told them Twinkies are nice.

For those who have been living under a rock, this is how a box of Twinkies looks like.

We have the Malaysian made Twinkies too ( by Gardenia *snicker* ), which are rather yummy too.

SO, the screen name refers to this! An awesome junk food that makes people fat and gives them heart attack!

And stop asking me why are Twinkies nice, they just are!

2nd day in KL

I'm not sure what to write about the 2nd day in KL because all we did was walk around till 7 pm. Then we headed off to the stadium to watch the band perform.

This is a picture of Sarah entertaining the guests at some fancy restaurant. Thank goodness we did not get thrown out, someone fancy who looked like the manager stared at Sarah while she was playing.

This is a picture of Sarah and I near a blinding Christmas tree.

My school band was playing that day ( 14th Dec ), third band performing.

These are the colour guards from Ashwin Willemse Orient Marching Band ( they named a band after a rugby player ) from South Africa.

Their band wore uniforms sponsored ( i think) by KFC, because there is a stick-on logo of KFC on every single one of them. One thing though, they're loud.

This band, is Pupuk Kaltim from Indonesia. I'm not sure how many band members they have but it's over a hundred i supposed.
Their formation grid was too small for their band and everything looks congested. I was certain that one of their colour guards knocked her poor head on one of the tubas.
They ran around like chickens with their tails set on fire. From far they looked like ants. Entertaining, but confusing..

1st day in KL

I arrived in KL at around 9 pm, and took a taxi to the hotel. Wanted to meet the girls at Stadium but the roads were blocked, so I got one night in the hotel, ALL TO MYSELF! By then, it was already 1 am in the morning.

I woke up the next day at around 8 am and walked around KL. Walked to BB Plaza and met a friend there. NOTE: Friend(s) shall be remained unknown for the 1st day.

:P

Anyway, my friend brought me to Pavilion and when we arrived, a magnificent giant Christmas tree greeted us (No, the tree did not talk). And in this tree, there were people singing Christmas carols.

Christmas is a really nice time to go travelling. Anyway, my friend brought me around KL, and traffic in KL is horrible, especially when you're driving around. The tolls, other drivers, and the sweltering hot weather can make some people go crazy. We drove to some other place, and that was fun too.

Anyway, after friend A (sorry) was needed at friend's house, so friend dropped me at Pavilion and I decided to walk around again. Met up with friend B, by then it was already noon, so we went for lunch. The prices for food was also ridiculous, RM 7 for a plate of Nasi Lemak, and RM 4 for desserts. Although I wasnt paying, I feel bad though. RM 11 for lunch, that's a first.

Walked around till 7 pm to watch some band play Christmas carols.

After watching the band play, friend and I used the monorail to stadium and we parted after reaching *sigh*. But the sadness did not linger for long, because I'll be meeting the girls. Kristine, Sarah, Pol, Grace, Bel and the band.

That night, the band was not playing so we watched other bands do their stuff.

See those crazy girls waving in the middle of the picture? That be them, my friends sad sad friends

We watched till the end and went back to the hotel at around 11 pm. Dont want to be late for the monorail!

This is exhausting..

Trying to please Grace, Pol and Kris with my KL posts. They wat the pics in it, that's why I cramped 3rd and 4th day together.

Next post is going to be about KL, from the 12th to the 17th. *pant*

*******************************************
Here's a haiku from me.
Fingers are hurting badly,

You girls better appreciate this!

3rd and 4th day at EDUcamp

Graham, a St Joe Kuching student, was bored since day 1, and he suggested that we make playing cards. Norman, Kerry and I thought it would be a crazy idea because it would take up our time. But Graham was determined, and after searching the whole stretch of dorm, he found a poster belonging to one of the girls (yes, we're staying in the girl's dorm), stuck to her wardrobe.
This is how Graham cards turn out to be. And if it wasnt for him, we would all be bored till death! Guess who was on the poster?

Harold and Lawrence playing Big 2, and that is Kerry's phone.

Try and guess whose face Graham tore and made into cards...

It was Anuar Zain. We actually did something good for this forsaken poster, it was stuck to a wardrobe, lying motionlessly before Graham came and liberated it from it's vertical prison. This happened on the 3rd day.

The 4th day was the potential jr. assessment, and lucky for the few of us, Graham, Norman, Kerry, Anis and I, our interview/discussion was at 1 pm, so no worries.

When others were all dressed for interview, with their ties and everything, we were still walking around in baggy pants and loose shirts, going for breakfast. We only got ready at around 11:30 am.

Tried to sleep in the afternoon before interview but the boys were catching Graham because he did not mention 'UNO' for his final card, and this happened about 3 times. The group that I was in took only 7 minutes for a whole group discussion, adn we were given 20 minutes. After our group discussion, we were all pack to go home.

Izzuan was the 1st to leave us, he got this fancy army truck to pick him up.

This is a picture of Izzuan. (Izzuan, if you think this is a bad pic of yourself, I'm sorry, send me a new one, and I'll replace this)

Oh, Graham sent me to my hotel on the 4th day, after the interview. Thanks for the ride. It's rather nice of him to send me, since we only met a few days ago. To Anis, Harold, Lawrence, Izzuan, Graham, Kerry and Norman, you guys are the best!

*********************************************

That same night, after coming back from EDUcamp, Kimberley invited me out, together with Christie and Audrey. We walked around before topping at The Secret Garden, a rather fancy restaurant, and thanks to Audrey, we got 10% off for all our dinner, you know why?

See that winged insect over there? That's why we got the discount, but we should have the whole dinner for free! We walked around, running from plaza to plaza, we talked about horrible things which were about horrible people.

Thanks Kim, Audrey and Christie, for dinner and your companionship.

2nd day at EDUcamp

There was nothing much on the 1st day, because everything was done already, so we were given 'free time' from 5pm.

Anis, Lawrence, Izzuan, and I went to Harold's room, just to hang out. We seem to be the noisiest on the 1st night because, the hallway was quite quiet at 8 pm. We talked till 11:30 pm before returning to our rooms. Since Harold and I got no room mate, and his room is crawling with roaches, I asked if he wanted to sleep over at my room. I got no idea how, but the day after, all 4 boys were in my room the 2nd night.

Since there were 2 double-decker beds, one room could fit 4 people, so I decided to sleep on the floor. Lawrence and Izzuan took the upper bunk on both beds, and Harold slept at the bottom bunk, below Lawrence. Anis could sleep at the bottom bunk below Izzuan, but he thought it was humid, so he slept on the floor. That night, we talked about the activities done on the 2nd day.

We did a group activity called 'Fire Extinguisher'. Try and think about other functions for a fire extinguisher and it's parts besides putting out fires. Some wacky ideas came out, such as, using it to break into a house, using the hose as a straw, cutting it in half for a vase etc.

After that activity, we did another one, 'Desert Survival'. The scenario is, you and your group crashed in a desert 70 miles from civilisation. They give you a list of 15 items, and you need to rate the items, 1 for the most important, and 15 for the least wanted. But before that, you should decide to stay at the crash site, or to move.

My group decided to move, but that was a bad idea. Our fascilitators said that if you move, you DIE! But, even when my group moved, we survived! Any groups with points >51 are dead, my group got 50, which means that we 'almost' died, but we got rescued just in time.

1st day at EDUcamp

I arrived at Kuching at around 10 am but registration for EDUcamp begins at 2 pm in the afternoon, so I decided to reach early for registration because I cant spend 4 hours in a hotel doing nothing.

Took a taxi to UNIMAS and got my own room.

I got this room all to myself, this was better than expected. Prefect camp scarred me for life, so when my brain processed the word 'camp', torture comes to mind. This camp had no torture at all.
So I got this room all for myself. After 'checking in', I walked around to make new friends, and I found a few interesting people. Harold from Miri, was next door, he have his room all to himself too, and Lawrence's room is just opposite mine.

Top: Lawrence Bottom: Harold Floor: Anis

I get to know Izzuan when he introduced himself to me before the opening ceremony. Anis was Izzuan's room mate, and I knocked into him when I opened my door.

I met a few St Joe Kuching guys during camp too. Graham was the 1st person I talked to. He was standing around with minute guy Nick, so I invited him to sit. Met Kerry and Norman, Graham's school mates, before the opening ceremony.

From left to right : Graham, Norman and Kerry. Playing cards made by Graham in my room.

Future posts.

Change of plans

UNIMAS is having a camp which seems similar to orientation camp for the January 2008 intake at UTP. We'll all be vying for the limited scholarship given out. I'll just pray hard so that everything will run smoothly. Truthfully speaking, I dont really fancy camps. I've got a few bad experiences with the activities in camps.

Long pants for sports is listed as one of the stuff to bring, so there is a high possibility that there will be sporty activities (e.g running, football etc). I'm not the sport jock kind of guy, most of my readers knows that.

I am determined to get out of this camp alive though, so that's the only justification I cling on to.

This 4 day camp would be ideal for me just to 'escape'. I've been throwing this word around so often nowadays that it seems to be a really good thing to do. Just to go to someplace unknown, where people dont know you, to start all over, live a new life (at least for a few days).

ANOTHER stressful Sunday!

Church procession was rather slow on that particular Sunday. Should have slept early on Saturday. Late nights always made me groggy the next morning. Before everyone leaves for Sunday breakfast, an announcement was made :

"The SMK ST Joseph Miri Marching Band is inviting ALL parishioners to their public performance TODAY at KRP at 5 in the afternoon."

After those words came out, the band members who sat with the choir looked at each other. Great! Now everyone is going to watch me screw up. I was not quite sure with the songs arrangements, the tempos, EVERYTHING!

I headed straight to KRP after breakfast, which by then was about 10 in the morning. I met Sebastian while waiting in the lobby. The band was having their usual practice session at 1 p.m., and I arrived at 10 a.m. So what can a boy my age do while waiting for time to pass? SLEEP!

I slept on one of those poofy couch they placed in the lobby, right in front of the wide screen TV. The weather was fine, with air-conditioning, REALLY comfortable couch, and a somlonent me, a perfect equation. So I slept to pass my time, I had to save energy for the 5 p.m. performace too.

5 p.m came, and everything seemed to fly by sooo quickly. It's like...picking your nose in public, need to get it over with, quickly! All I can say about the performance was, THANK GOODNESS I DID NOT SCREW UP!

The pain, the horror...

The band is going to have a performance at KRP tomorrow at 5pm, I'll be conducting. This is quite nerve wrecking because, I STILL DONT KNOW THE WHOLE SHOW!

I was asked by Mr Jimmy to be the band's conductor for this Sunday's (tomorrow) performance. I thought the songs would be easy, but nooo...it had to be fancy (Nice songs, but hard to memorize).

I'll see if I could put these in order:

1. Camino Real - Starts slow for quite a number of bars but after that, it speeds up.

2. Ngajat - Something that is similar to the one we played at this year's state level but with added bars which complicates the counting.

3. Winter Sonata - Slow song, but tempo tends to speed up/slow down because of some rushing/dragging.

4. Come Out And Play - Static show. Upbeat song, the easiest to conduct. No problem here, I think??

5. Cosmos - Song composed by Satan's own personal composer. Changes tempo 6 times. WTF?! From around 75 to 160, then slows down dramatically and then speeds up again to 180. This is the only song that worries me the most.

Oh please, oh please, oh please, let it rain for a whole day tomorrow!

Good Luck Pol!

Unknown message may contain good news

A few weeks ago, I applied for a scholarship to Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) studying Multimedia and Technology, and I recieved a message today. The message goes like this:

"KEPUTUSAN PERMOHONAN UNTUK KEMASUKAN KE UTP SESI JAN 2008 ATAS TAJAAN PETRONAS TELAH DIMAKLUMKAN. SILA SEMAK DI LAMAN WEB"

And so I did, and I got in. Whoopiee? Not really.

One problem though, the EDUCAMP Programme in Kuching, a programme which is almost like prefect camp in my school for those chosen few, will be on the 8th till the 11th of December. I was supposed to leave to KL on the 8th with my friends, and I guess, plans have changed.

So, I guess the only way is to be at EDUCAMP (which is COMPULSORY for those who wants a scholarship) on the 8th till 11th, then leave Kuching on the 12th to KL. And stay happy and merry from the 13th to the 17th. 5 days is enough, no??

Cant believe I'm going to miss the opening for WAMSB because of this camp. I may miss my school band performance too! *gasp* Hate

Look on the bright side, at least I get to go to EDUCAMP and meet new people, that's a good thing right? RIGHT ?!?
